Throughout the ages, the City of Jerusalem has been surrounded by a wall for defense purposes. Each time the city was conquered, its wall was also broken. The Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem that exist today were built in the 16th century by the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
Since the late 19th century when the new neighborhoods were built outside the walls, the walls have become less significant for their defense and more as a symbol and impressive part of the landscape of the Old City of Jerusalem.
Obverse: An impressive, sculpted three-dimensional design of the Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem encircles the medal. In the center, in stylized lettering in English and Hebrew is the inscription "Walls of Jerusalem".
Reverse: Lion of Jerusalem and prominent buildings of Jerusalem, within the outline of a coat of arms, The Holy Land Mint trademark. Inscriptions: 3oz. Fine Silver .999 on the silver, in English, "Jerusalem of Gold" in English and Hebrew.
